re: posts about not being able to access veg/non-gmo/organic food

First off I would like to say that I have been veg for 8.5 years and I dont plan on taking up an omnivorous lifestyle anytime soon. I am also privileged to live in a major city (SF) that has grocery stores and farmers markets. I am also poor, and I receive EBT(food stamp) benefits from the state of california - if I didnt get food stamps there is no way in fuck I would be able to feed myself given my current income.

This post is regarding quite a lot of people I have seen, read, or heard talking about the very real problem of food accessibility, food deserts and the cost of maintaining a healthy and conscious diet. While these problems are totally legitimate, and structured along class & race lines, I have seen more and more people who have income enough to support themselves, live in metropolitan areas and have access to grocery stores that sell vegetarian, non-GMO, organic and otherwise conscious food, use this problem as an excuse to justify eating 7-11 hot dogs and the like. Obviously I think a veg/organic/non-GMO diet supports a healthy eco system and a healthy body, but the point of this post isnt to convince anyone to “switch sides” or whatever. I just want to call out people who arent struggling financially and who have access to these kinds of food who claim to care about sustainability or animal rights for using this issue as an excuse when it doesnt even apply to their community or situation.
